I like Asaph. He reminds me that people who are passionate about God are not perfect. In Psalm 73 we get to see this clearly. He confesses that he “envied the arrogant” when he saw their prosperity. He went on to gripe that they always seem to have it together; good health, friends, confidence, and so forth, finally declaring that his own determination to be pure was pretty much a waste of time. But then comes revelation: “When I tried to

understand all this, it was oppressive to me, till I entered the sanctuary of God…”
What’s been causing you to gripe? What’s been causing you to be upset? Or to fear? Or to panic? Things begin to make sense when we move from the outer perimeter deep into God’s presence. May each of you find God’s peace as you press into Him this year.

Christmas is probably the greatest time of year for children and families. With feasting, family, and fun, the original purpose of Christmas either gets missed, or it is a tag on.  Most believers would agree that our focus should be the other way.  How can we make that happen?   Here are some suggestions:

1. Begin your Christmas Eve or Day with a reading or a video clip of the Christmas Story
    and a prayer to thank Jesus for coming
2. Take a few minutes to talk about what that first Christmas may have been like
3. Remind each other of the influence of this wonderful story on our lives today!

I reviewed some of the prayer requests I received from children this year.  Here are three:   “Please ask God to stay with me when I start high School, so I don’t turn away from Him; Pray for me that I don’t get bullied; Please pray for the kids in my class to be closer to God and Jesus”. These children have great hearts for God – and great faith in His ability to help their lives. Let us all thank God for the influence of Jesus upon our world.

All of our hearts should turn to home on these special occasions. Due to cost, time, work commitment, or difficult relationships,  being home is not possible for everyone. In God’s economy, home can be where you are! We welcome you to enjoy the Season with new friends here. Family includes God’s kids!   Accept an invitation from a new friend or even a kind stranger. Or you may wish to welcome another newcomer to spend an evening with your family. Another option is the

Have you ever made a promise you didn’t keep? Have you ever been promised something that never happened?

Either of these experiences erodes something called trust – either in yourself, or in another. There is one more consideration -  you may have given up on a promise due to the time that has elapsed.
The Promise of the Messiah was centuries old before it was realized. Sadly, there are some folks who still believe it has not been fulfilled. The truth is that 2007 years ago, a miraculous baby in an animal stable was discovered by shepherds of Bethlehem. This visit changed their lives. The reverberations of that event continue to affect and influence our world to this day. Songs of the Christ – we call carols – are heard everywhere. A festive air fills the month of December.

There are hospitals, schools, universities, and millions of charities that have been birthed in His Name. Most importantly, millions of people have been transformed by the promise fulfilled. This would be a great time for you to research this ancient story,  and be renewed in hope, or discover it for the first time!

On this second Sunday of Advent, we are beginning to feel the thrill of this Season of Hope and Expectation. There are many cultural trappings of this season, but let us focus on the real motive for celebration….

Although Jesus was born 2007 years ago, this Season allows us  a small sense of what the expectation of Mary & Joseph, Zacharias & Elizabeth may have been like. We must wonder what they wondered – “how can this be?” The story of Jesus’ birth is the most amazing and wonder-filled birth story I know. The miraculous conception, the prophetic forecast, the timing, the location, and the survival of this Child can only be partly appreciated today.

Yet, we have the substance, that Christ Jesus came into this world as a babe, grew to manhood, transformed current concepts of God, and presented the world with the greatest Gift ever!  Please join the angels in hearty song!
